Broadening Pupils minds

Was watching The Story of Ireland last night and the presenter Fergal Keane was talking to Declan Healy the history teacher in Presentation boys College in Cork.

Healy said his aim was always to broaden the pupils minds in terms of the history of Ireland. He gave his pupils an essay entitled Edward Carson: An Irish Patriot.

The class looked up at him, baffled and one pupils said that the essay title didn’t make sense. Healy’s reply was just because his vision of Ireland was different to yours, does that mean that his vision was wrong?

The teacher made a really good point and is a good indication of how we history teachers should broaden the pupils minds.
